Education/Teaching workshop: Millichap -- Cryptologic Adventures in Mathematics Courses of Many Shapes and Sizes
Cryptology, the making and breaking of codes and ciphers, is a fascinating topic that
offers ample opportunities to apply tools from across the spectrum of undergraduate
mathematics.
Furthermore, cryptology directly connects to historical events, public policy,
literature, art, pop culture, and many other areas. Thus, infiltrating cryptology into
mathematics courses can provide students opportunities to both apply core mathematical
principles in a different setting and see mathematics in an interdisciplinary light.
In this workshop, we will first share some of our experiences teaching cryptology
courses and mathematics courses that implement a cryptology module. We will also share
a variety of class activities and assessments. In the second half of this workshop, we
will discuss particular topics in more depth and assist participants with brainstorming
ideas for how to bring cryptology into their own mathematics courses!
This workshop will be lead by Assoc Prof Christian Millichap, Furman University, SC USA.
