Summer Research Scholarships (formerly Vacation Scholarships)

Each year the School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Faculty of Science award a number of summer research scholarships for tenure in the summer vacation (December – February). These scholarships are typically advertised in August/September.

As well as scholarships offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Science Faculty, there are scholarships offered by AMSI (the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute) which are tenable in the School. If you are a 2nd or 3rd year student at the University of Sydney and have a good average in advanced maths/stats units then you are eligible to apply for the AMSI VRS. Here is a list of projects and supervisors. Applications for AMSI VRS 2026/27 are open now, and close 21 September 2026. However, before applying directly to AMSI you need to apply within the University of Sydney using the following internal links before the deadline of 11:59pm Thursday 10 September:

All applicants to the AMSI VRS are encouraged to also apply for the Denison scholarship when it opens. Application for the Denison scholarships is through the Faculty of Science Denison Research Scholarships and Science Research Experience Scholarships. The value of the AMSI VRS Scholarship will be topped up to the same level as the Denison Scholarship.
